MICHAEL DAVID: Drawing into Painting and the Third Dimension. Scaling Up, the How and The Why ?

3-Month Salon
Instructor: Michael David
Cost: $750

Dates: Wednesday 6 weeks: 4:00 PM EST meeting time, on Zoom
Time: 90 min

We are pleased to announce that Michael David will be running a 3-month salon for the Fall 2024 Session.

The focus on this Salon will be using the concept of “drawing “in different mediums to open and challenge your painting or three – dimensional practice.  This is not the conventual concept of drawing and rendering an image (though there will be a session with a guest artist to hone your fundamental skills) but rather the relationship of your hand to your eye the marks that reveal the process of discovery in one’s practice regardless of your medium, whether it figurative, abstract or three dimensional.

The concept of scale, why do you want to work larger? why small is not small enough? what proportions what surface are you specifically  choosing to best serve your work will be explored, as well as discussing “scale “in a more personal context – the scale of one’s practice, i.e, the scale of your commitment and belief in one’s self and what you might need to deepen that

As far as the more practical applications and tools regarding you work regarding scale:

How does one transpose the speed and improvisations found more accessible on a smaller scale to larger one?

What tools, what techniques what surfaces and supports may be of help in scaling up?

What surfaces are you working on? Are they specific enough to transpose the essence of what you are doing on a smaller scale,

The format of the salon is as follows:

  • Duration: 6 Sessions, meeting once a week, every other week, for 12 weeks.

  • Participants:  6 People per Salon - small, curated Groups determined by enrollment

  • Time/Length:  Salons meet Wednesday at 4:00 PM EST for 90 Minutes

  • Your first critique will be a 45-minute presentation to Michael and your peers, giving an overview of how your history influences the work that you make. Where you come from and where you are. There will be time for to ask questions and receive feedback from Michael and your peers.

  • You will be given suggestions of artists to look at along with recommended readings and media if relevant.

  • Your second critique will give you the opportunity to present to outside critic, receiving additional feedback from another relevant voice in the art world today.

  • Tech Requirements:  Zoom account (free)

  • Should you miss a Salon or wish to review your own Salon, you will have access to the recordings. Those enrolled are allowed to audit other Salons and Artist Critiques (if/when approved by guest critics).

Zoom meetings will consist of artists presenting their works, workshopping ideas, critique discussions to create a collaborative architecture to support your studio and professional practices on an ongoing basis regardless of the level you are at. Additionally, each participant will present to one of our visiting artists or critics for an in-depth critique. Artists of all levels of development and media are welcome. Michael David: Guggenheim Fellow, recipient of the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award, Yaddo and Edward Albee Fellow, Michael David has been exhibiting internationally since 1981, first with the historical Sidney Janis and then with M. Knoedler & Co. Exhibiting widely throughout the United States for 40 years, he has been the subject of much historical and curatorial acclaim. His two most recent solo exhibitions “The Mirror Stage” inn 2022 and Nighttime With Dreams and Mirrors in 2024 were held at Johnson Lowe Gallery in Atlanta, GA. His work is included in many prominent private collections and the permanent public collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Guggenheim Museum in New York, The Brooklyn Museum, The Houston Museum of Contemporary Art, the Denver Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Margulies Collection  and the Rubell Museum in Miami and the Edward Albee Foundation in Montauk NY, and was the subject of a one-person exhibition at Aspen Museum of Art. Considered an inheritor of Abstract Expressionism, David’s abstract work primarily centers on the use of a densely layered surface to facilitate a direct and immediate spiritual experience. He often incorporates religious iconography and symbolism, art historical themes such as the nude, and contemporary politics into his paintings resulting in a critical dialogue between the layered abstraction of the surface and the integrated representational imagery. Over the last decade, David established the Fine Arts Workshop in Atlanta and the Yellow Chair Salon, working with artists on an immersive one-on-one basis, helping to develop their voice and professional practices, finding exhibition opportunities and taking their individual expressions to the next level. His mentorship practice expanded to include residencies and workshops in Dallas, TX, Truro, MA and Brooklyn, NY. He has taught painting at Princeton, was head of the Graduate Painting Department at SCAD in Atlanta and lectured and served as keynote speaker at many universities and art centers across the United States.  Over the last twelve years David has established, directed and curated two of the most successful galleries in Brooklyn: Life On Mars and M. David & Co.
